Paternity Leave

Hi Guys, I've just joined the tribe, and I already have something to put forward to ya.

I was reading this interesting article on the BBC about a month ago and once again some of our Nordic counterparts seem to be ahead of us in terms of rights.

In Denmark and Iceland, fathers can take up to 3 months, maybe more, paid paternity leave. It is extremely important in my views that fathers get to spend time with their young children. It also shows that people are happier at their workplace. Also important to note is the decline in divorce rate. In this day and age, I think governments should be trying to cut the divorce rate as much as they possibly can. Not only that, fathers can bond with their children and not have to think about the economic consequences of taking time of work.

I don't know about the US, but in Canada, as far as I know, the only way fathers can take time off is if they use their annual leave. For a country that prides itself on human rights, I hope Canada (as well as other countries) changes its laws to make it easier for fathers to be fathers, and hopefully curb divorce rates.

In the US, most employers must provide up to 12 weeks unpaid leave for both women and men for the birth of a child (FMLA).
